About the Designated Domestic Program

Accepting Applications

IAN Provides adoption services to clients wishing to adopt through our Domestic Infant Adoption Program, or for families seeking to adopt through our Designated Adoption Program.

A "designated" adoption is defined as an adoptive placement in which adoptive parent(s) have been chosen by the birth parent(s) prior to either party's involvement with an adoption agency. A designated adoption may also take the form of a client completing a Home Study before independently seeking birth parent(s).

Parent Criteria

  • Age between twenty-five and fifty.
  • Any past criminal history must be disclosed in the Pre-application.
  • Complete adoption training and education prior to finalization of their adoption.
  • Approved Home Study
  • Provide letters and photos of the child to the birth parent(s) at minimum, after the baby is born. Any additional contact/visitation will be decided prior to birth.
  • Being available for monthly post-placement telephone calls and/or visits until the finalization of your adoption.
  • Pediatrician's reports from each doctor's visit until the adoption is finalized.

5

Review of Birth Parent(s)

You will review birth parent information and decide which situations to show your Family Profile.

Birth Parent(s) will select the adoptive family

The birth parent(s) will review your profile and select you which will lead to a meeting with them.

7

Child Placement

The child will be placed in your care after the birth parent(s) gives consent for you to adopt their child.

8

Finalization

IAN will help you finalize the adoption in court while also helping with the relinquishment of the rights of birth parent(s).

Preparing for Adoption

IAN Application and Intake Interview

You will meet with a caseworker who will provide an overview of the adoption process, fees, costs, adoption laws, agency policies, goals, and signing of all required documents.

Home Study

A Home Study consists of interviews, both joint and individually, including interviews with any children in your home, review of documents, obtaining background clearances, and education classes. A home visit will be conducted to view your house and neighborhood, and a safety inspection will be completed.

Adoption Training and Education Classes

Training classes are required by the State of Colorado and IAN will provide training. The training will prepare you for the realities of adopting and parenting a child as well as allow you to form supportive relationships with other adoptive families.

Birth Mother Match

Personal Family Profile

The adoptive parents will prepare a Personal Family Profile for birth parent(s) to review at the time they are selecting the family.

Birth Mother Choose Adoptive Parents

When chosen by birth parent(s), the adoptive parents are provided with the social and medical history frms completed by the birth parent(s), informed concerning any expenses required by the birth parents, and other relevant information.

Birth Mother Match

Most matches will occur outside of Colorado. If the clients reside in Colorado, a "match meeting" with the birth parent(s) will be scheduled. This is a facilitated meeting attended by the adoptive family, the birth parent(s), and an IAN caseworker. Topics of discussion will include the pregnancy, the hospital plan, desired contact before the birth, and the amount of openness between the parties, in the future.

Child Placement

Hospital Discharge

A birth parent counselor will be present at the hospital before and after the birth of the baby in inteface with the birth parent(s), the adoptive family, and hosital staff. IAN will prepare all court documents and required hospital paperwork. IAN will coordinate the placement process to completion.

Court Approval of Placement (If Birth Mother Resides in Colorado)

IAN will assist you in finding an attorney to file the Petition for Adoption within thirty days after placement of the baby with you. Another option is to retain IAN to file the petition and subsequent documents required for the finalization of the adoption.

Birth Parent Right Relinquishment (If Birth Mother Resides in Colorado)

An attorney will complete all court documents for the relinquishment of parental rights. Once a court date is obtained, IAN will contact the adoptive family.

Interstate Process Outside of Colorado

  • The Interstate Compact for the Placement of Children (ICPC) enables the facilitation of an adoption when the birth parent(s) resides in a different state.
  • ICPC paperwork is completed first by the sending state, where the child is born to Colorado. The sending state forwards the ICPC packet to the State of Colorado contract agency for approval.
  • IAN will work with the agency or attorney representing the birth mother which includes relinquishment and finalization of adoption. IAN will be representing the prospective adoptive parents.

Foster Care Licensing

If you reside in the State of Colorado, you will be licensed as a "Foster/Adopt" home from the time of placement to the date of adoption finalization (usually six or seven months after placement). IAN will be given guardianship through a court order and will be able to consent to the adoption of your child.

Finalization & Post Placement

Finalization

At the end of the six-month period, you will finalize the adoption of your child in the appropriate district court. IAN will complete and assemble all court documents for finalization, accompany you to the court hearing and provide testimony on your behalf. We will obtain certified copies of the Final Adoption Decree for you and for IAN's file.

Post Placement Supervision

Post placement supervision is required by the State of Colorado for a period of six months minimum. Several face-to-face visits with the child and all family members are necessary until the adoption is finalized. This process is to provide support for you and to ensure the physical and emotional well-being of your child. We will assist you with techniques to use towards successful attachment and adjustment between your family and your child.
