To qualify as a Colombian citizen while living in the U.S.,there are several pathways available depending on your circumstances. Colombian nationality law recognizes both birthright citizenship and citizenship by descent. Here are the primary ways someone can qualify for Colombian citizenship:

• Born in Colombia: If you were born in Colombia, including those adopted to the US, you are automatically a Colombian citizen, even if you now live in the U.S.
• Born Abroad to Colombian Parents: If you were born outside of Colombia to at least one Colombian parent, you are eligible for Colombian citizenship by descent. You can apply for citizenship by registering your birth at a Colombian consulate or embassy and securing the appropriate passport, Colombian birth certificate and national ID. The process involves submitting proof of your parents' Colombian nationality, such as their Colombian IDs or passports, along with your birth certificate.  IAN will provide you with guidance on  securing these important documents.
